NOMADS Bindle is an iOS app that allows students in lecture classes or conferences to interact, brainstorm and problem-solve.

NOMADS requires three things working together:
1) applications running on iOS mobile devices
2) the Main Display which shows the merged input of all the participants and is launched from the Control Panel.
3) the Instructor Control Panel to turn on functionality, control Display elements, and send prompts and poll requests to the participant devices.

Access the Control Panel at http://nomads.music.virginia.edu/NOMADSBindle/ControlPanel

Or simply navigate to http://nomads.music.virginia.edu and follow the link to "Use NOMADS"

The opening screen asks for a Login name. Login can be used to take attendance in a class context, or it can be an anonymous name tag. The participant can not use the tools in the Bindle until they log in. The tools in the icon bar are blacked.

Once logged in, the Welcome screen shows your user name, a link to learn more about NOMADS, a logout button, and the various Bindle icons are revealed in the icon bar below.

The following images show each of the icon screens and describe the functionality:
1) Group Discuss, 2) Thought Cloud, 3) Poll Aura, 4) Pointer

1) The Discuss icon launches the Group Discuss app that allows all participants to
communicate with text in real time. The discussion appears on the user’s phone
and can be projected on the Main Display. The instructor or presenter can set the topic of
discussion (here: “Introduce yourselves”) from the Control Panel and this appears on all the
devices.

2) Clicking on the Cloud icon, opens the Thought Cloud input window. Here you can enter thoughts
into the Thought Cloud. The Thought Cloud is a real time text display field where words that have been entered more frequently are larger, and words entered less frequently are smaller. The Thought Cloud acts like a real time tag cloud with built in memory so that the evolving thoughts of the group can be monitored in real time.

The Thought Cloud Main Display shows the evolving thoughts of the group following the prompt by the presenter. More popular words grow in size while less popular words shrink.

3) The Poll icon launches the Poll Aura app that allows for participants to respond to poll prompts.
The results of the poll are projected on the Main Display in real time. The instructor or presenter can set the poll question from the Control Panel and this appears on all the devices. There are three supported polling options: 1) Yes/No, 2) A/B/C/D/E and 3) 1 through 10.

The polling input is displayed accordingly in real time on the MainDisplay.

4) The Pointer icon launches the Pointer app that gives each person a cursor on the Main Display. Each participant can move their cursor independently allowing members to point to different places on the Main Display. The Pointer reveals how many people are connected through NOMADS, and it allows the instructor or presenter to ask for non-text input. all participants to communicate with text in real time. For example, connected participants might use the Pointer to decide on the direction of a presentation, or to highlight points that are unclear in a lecture. Any image can be used as a background on the Main Display, and the presenter can change the image.

For example, the presenter may be interested in the demographics of the audience, and ask them to point to the place they live on a US map. This kind of information could be helpful in shaping the direction and focus of a presentation. Any image may be used as the background image for the Pointer.

Auksalaq NOMADS is an iOS app that allows audience members to interact with the Auksalaq
multimedia work in real time during a performance.

Auksalaq NOMADS requires three things working together:
1) applications running on iOS mobile devices
2) the Main Display which shows the merged input of all the performers
3) the Conductor Control Panel to turn on functionality and control Display elements.

Access the Main Display at http://nomads.music.virginia.edu/AuksalaqNOMADS/MainDisplay

Access the Control Panel at http://nomads.music.virginia.edu/AuksalaqNOMADS/ControlPanel

Or simply navigate to http://nomads.music.virginia.edu and follow the link to "Use NOMADS"

When you download the app here is what you see:

The buttons are greyed out and inactive until the interface is activated by the Conductor Controller in a performance.

During the Auksalaq performance, modules are turned on. Here is how you interact with the app:

1) clicking on the discussion window where you will discuss with other audience members around the world. The audience discussion shows up on every device.

2) by clicking on the ThoughtCloud window where you will input thoughts into the cloud

3) by moving the cursor around the screen.

The iOS devices generate sound according to the music of Auksalaq. And the audience input creates group socio-synthesis sounding from the hall sound system.

The Main Display synthesizes audience input into an elaborate projection of sound, text and graphics. Your input is merged with the input of all the other users on the NOMADS network and projected on a Main Display and sounded out of speakers.
